UCAS & Careers Support

Baines Sixth provides a variety of support for students applying for apprenticeships, higher education, studying abroad, a gap year, getting a job or moving on to a training provider.

Support for students begins in Year 12 with the Baines Careers convention – with many outside organisations in school. Students are supported throughout the UCAS process and in their journey to the next step. Support begins during Year 12 and continues throughout Year 13. Students have access to the following support and guidance:


  • Manchester UCAS convention visit
  • Visit to Leeds Open to experience a City University
  • Timetabled UCAS application sessions
  • Personal Statement session delivered by Leeds University
  • Personal statement support with an experienced Sixth Form Tutor
  • Individual subject and tutor references for each student
  • Student finance – Outside speaker
  • Student life – presentation by Edge Hill
  • What Uni presentation on how to select a university
  • Oxbridge conference
  • Local university provision – Blackpool and Fylde (Outside speaker)
  • Support with early applications for medicine
  • Practice interviews
  • Social Mobility Foundation – support for low income families and students who are first generation to go to university

Baines Sixth form also offers support for students considering non-university pathways:

  • A Star Future – Presentation about studying abroad and the opportunities that exist (Outside speaker)
