In July 2000 a small group of Baines Sixth Form students and staff completed a challenging 165 mile coast to coast bike ride from Bridlington to Blackpool to raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust in memory of 2 students who had lost their lives to cancer. This ride, the Baines Bikeathon, became an annual event with more and more students taking part each year. From the 18 rides Baines Sixth has raised over £100, 000 for the charity making it the biggest national school contributor for Teenage Cancer Trust which was acknowledged by the charity last year and representatives from school were invited to Christie Hospital to see how the money raised from the Bikeathon had been invested.

In July 2017 to celebrate the school’s 300th anniversary the Bikeathon team consisted of 16 past students some of whom were friends of the 2 students whose memory the ride honours and others who had cycled in the past when they were in the sixth form. These former students completed the ride with 17 current students and staff, several of whom have participated in all 18 rides – the Bikeathon 2017 raised over £9, 000. As a school we are immensely proud of the sum of money raised for Teenage Cancer Trust and believe that the commitment the school has made and continues to make to this charity for the past 18 years makes us worthy of consideration for the health and well-being award as the Bikeathon has the work of Teenage Cancer Trust at its heart.
