Over the two year GCSE course pupils follow the AQA course, building on prior knowledge and understanding from KS3 and developing vocabulary related to the following topics: Health; Relationships & Choices; Free Time & The Media; Holidays; Home, Local Area & Environmental Issues & School, Future Plans and Current & Future Jobs.

Pupils regularly carry out a range of activities to aid progress across all skills areas (listening, speaking, reading and writing.) In addition pupils develop grammatical understanding of key tenses as well as other relevant grammatical points.

Assessment consists of:

Unit 1 – Listening Exam (20% of total GCSE)

Taken in May of Year 11.

Tiered entry – Foundation 30 minute exam / Higher – 40 minute exam.

Unit 2 – Reading Exam (20% of total GCSE)

Taken in May of Year 11.

Tiered entry – Foundation 30 minute exam / Higher – 50 minute exam.

Unit 3 – Controlled Speaking Assessment (30% of total GCSE)

Conducted and marked internally, externally moderated.

Pupils complete two assessments on different topics during Years 10 & Year 11. Pupils must prepare, learn by heart and record two 4-6 minute long scripts based on two different topics.

Unit 4 – Controlled Writing Assessment (30% of total GCSE)

Conducted internally, externally marked.

Pupils submit two assessments on different topics during Years 10 & 11 Pupils must prepare and write under controlled conditions two 200-300 word essays, based on two different topics.
