Physical Education Key Stage 4 Curriculum

In Year 10 the students can choose PE at GCSE or BTEC (5 lessons) as well as their CORE PE lessons (3 every 2 weeks). In CORE PE they follow the same pathways from Year 9 but adopt more of the roles within PE including performer, official, coach, organiser, choreographer.

Students who choose to take GCSE PE follow the AQA course for 5 lessons over 2 weeks

This is assessed through 60% Practical and 40% Theory. The course covers the following topics;

Health and Fitness

Factors affecting performance

Training principles and methods

Body systems: Skeletal, Muscular, Circulatory, Respiratory, Aerobic & Anaerobic.

Risk Assessment & Safety.

Changing Attitudes in society – e.g. Women in sport

Social Grouping Role Models, Peer pressure, Significant others.

Leisure time Reasons for increased leisure time, ‘User groups’.

Advantages and Disadvantages of hosting a major international competition.

Sponsorship – advantages and disadvantages to the sponsor, performer and sport.

Media – different types and uses of media. Etiquette, Social behaviour, Hooliganism

Political & Financial issues related to major international sport events.

Differences between Amateur & Professional sport.

Influences of local and National Providers: Public, Private and Voluntary.

Structure of sport in the UK. National Governing Bodies. Funding.

BTEC PE

Students who choose to take BTEC PE follow the Edexcel course for 5 lessons over 2 weeks. This includes the following compulsory modules:
