History GCSE

Pupils study the AQA Modern World B course at Baines. All examinations are taken at the end of Year 11.

The Unit 1 examination contains the following topics,

  • Peacemaking 1918-1919 and the League of Nations
  • Hitler’s foreign policy and the origins of the Second World War
  • The Origins of the Cold War 1945-1955

The Unit 2 examination contains the following topics,

  • The Roaring Twenties: The USA 1919-1929
  • Hitler’s Germany, 1929-1939
  • The USA and Vietnam: Failure Abroad and at Home, 1964-1975

Unit 3: Controlled Assessment

Students will also get the opportunity to study aspects of World War One and Two through the Historical Enquiry. This forms 25% of the final GCSE qualification.

GCSE World War One Battlefields Trip

Every year the History Department take Year 10 History GCSE students to the First World War battlefields of Belgium and France.

We base the trip around the city of Ypres in Belgium. Totally destroyed by conflict during the war, it was rebuilt in its former style retaining the Medieval architecture of the cloth hall and cathedral.

We visit many sites in Belgium and France, including cemeteries, tunnels and trenches. Some of our visits include excursions to,
