Business Studies

Business Studies is a new subject at GCSE for all students. Whether students end up working for themselves, for the government or a private business they will be able to use some of the skills and knowledge that they develop by studying Business at GCSE. Students will study either Unit 1, 2 and 3 or if opting for Business and Communication systems they will study units 8, 9 and 10.

Unit 1 – Setting up a Business. Students will investigate

• Enterprise

• Marketing

• Finance

• People

This unit is assessed by an external written assessment of 60 marks and 1 hour in length which is taken at the end of year 11.

Unit 2 – Growing as a Business. Students will investigate

• Business organisation

• Marketing

• Finance

• People

• Operations

This unit is assessed by an external written assessment of 60 marks and 1 hour in length and is taken at the end of year 11.

Unit 3 – Investigating Businesses – This unit is a controlled assessment which will be completed during year 11. The task is set by the exam board and changes each year. More information will be given when available for this unit.

Unit 8 – ICT systems in Business. Students will investigate a range of topic areas including:

• Administration

• Human Resources

• Communication

This unit is assessed by an external written assessment of 60 marks and 1 hour in length and is taken at the end of year 11.

Unit 9 Using ICT in business. Students will investigate

• Word processing

• Spreadsheets

• Databases

• Graphic s

• Presentations

• Web designing

This unit is assessed by a computer based examination of 60 marks and 1 hour 30 minutes in length which is sat the end of year 11.

Unit 10 – Investigating ICT in Business. This unit is a controlled assessment and assesses the content covered in Unit 9. The actual tasks change each year but typically include; creating a poster, creating a tweet, designing a website or a business card. This is completed at the start of year 11.
