Health & Social Care

Intent

About 3 million people in the UK work in health and social care. In healthcare, this includes jobs such as doctors, pharmacists, nurses, midwives, healthcare assistants and administrators, while social care roles include care assistants, social workers, occupational therapists and counsellors. Demand for both health and social care is likely to continue to rise, so it is sure to continue to play a key role in UK society, and the demand for people to fill these vital jobs will increase. Our intent is to teach students how people grow and develop over the course of their lives, from infancy to old age, and all the factors that may affect this, such as major life changing events like marriage or parenthood. They will learn how people adapt to these changes as well as the types of support available to help them. We will teach about the different health and social care services, and about ‘care values’ and their importance in making sure that the people who use these services get the care they need. Our students will be able to demonstrate these care values practically and have the opportunity to review their own performance in demonstrating ‘care values’. Students will be confident in interpreting data about someone’s state of health in order to design a plan that will allow them to improve their health and wellbeing.

Teaching Strategies

We use case studies as a basis for our learning in Health and Social Care, to apply our knowledge to real life case studies and situations. We explore people at all life stages and use resources such as Department for Education, to be able to see Health and Social Care practically applied.

As this is a vocational subject, homework is set as required. In the run up to exams this is linked to revision of key concepts and sample questions. Outside of exam preparation time, homework is generally research based.

We use Google Classrooms within the department and students will use this both within lessons and from home.

On Tuesdays after school the department run a catch-up revision session for students to attend.

We strongly recommend the purchase of the following books to aid continuous learning and revision.
